Provigil is a prescription drug used to improve wakefulness in people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, shift work sleep disorder, and narcolepsy. The manufacturer, Cephalon, paid a civil settlement in connection with a criminal charge for marketing Provigil for off-label uses – “as a non-stimulant drug for the treatment of sleepiness, tiredness, decreased activity, lack of energy, and fatigue.”

Nevertheless, doctors continue to prescribe it for off-label uses ranging from age-related memory decline and depression to jet lag and treatment for cocaine addiction.
