Youth Voices Project

When working with our 2006-2016 Map of Future Forces Affecting Education, we wanted to create a forum for youth to express their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations about the future. We asked Institute for the Future (IFTF) and the Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) to develop a creative process and guide for youth to make their own digital stories about their lives ten years in the future.

Together IFTF and CDS conducted three workshops from March through May 2008 in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Columbus, Ohio, to develop a set of activities that youth, teachers, and any youth workers can use to develop personal stories about youth concerns, hopes, aspirations, and points of view about the future and what the future means for us all.

This process resulted In a story gallery, a set of videos, and a set of workshop materials:

  • You will find a collection of stories from youth ages twelve to twenty-one in the student story gallery
  • You can also explore videos about the driving forces from the 2006 Map, which have become more intensified in the 2020 Forecast.
  • You can also take a look at the workshop materials, which include a story template, writing prompts, and digital media guidelines.
