Cognitive Modification: A Trend of Altered Bodies

Altered Bodies > Cognitive Modification
Cognitive Modification
The brain becomes a site for alteration and maintenance. An array of services, products, and programs aimed at cognitive enhancements has already hit the market. Advances in the study of neuroscience and neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to create new neural connections throughout life) will inspire further developments. Students are experimenting with off-label uses of Adderall, and more such drugs will follow. Haptic feedback devices (using the sense of touch) and neural feedback interfaces (using direct communication between a person’s brain and a computer) are just on the horizon. These will combine to make the brain a battleground in learning.

Ways to Start Taking Action
  1. Add articles from www.brains.org to your PTA or school newsletter
  2. Improve your brain's health by spending ten minutes per day on the SharpBrains website
  3. Learn how Adderall is helping students study longer

Chiropractic Care May Help with Learning Disorders

Chiropractic care may have help to correct neurological problems contributing to learning disabilities and dyslexia. In the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, Dr. Yannick Pauli, says methodological weaknesses of recent studies preclude definitive conclusions, so the results are considered preliminary. Evidence on the causes of learning disabilities and dyslexia and the role of the cerebellum suggest that spinal misalignment may be involved in central nervous system problems related to learning difficulties. Theories hold that vertebral misalignments interfere with messages from the peripheral to the central nervous system or that disorganization within the central nervous system is a factor. Pauli looked at 4 anecdotal reports and 4 before-and-after studies in which chiropractors specializing in applied kinesiology helped people with learning disorders. Pauli calls for chiropractors to publish better quality research on use of the practice for learning disabilities. He asks chiropractors not to see the treatment as a "pretended cure" for learning problems, but as an approach to improve or correct nervous system dysfunctions that may contribute to these problems.

Parents are getting domain names for their infants because the name of choice may not be available when their babies become teens. The trend hints at the potential importance of domain names in establishing one's future digital identity. Imagine if one day the domain could take you directly to social-networking profiles, blogs, photo albums, and more. It is the starting point for your online identity," said Warren Adelman, president GoDaddy.com Inc., which sells basic domain name packages for about $9 a year. Hundreds of companies sell domain names with suffixes like ".com," ".org" and ".info," which individuals can link to personal Web sites and e-mail accounts. Parents visit web sites of such domain name companies, search for the name they want and, if no one else has claimed it yet, buy it with a credit card.
