Eco-Schools: A Trend of Altered Bodies

Altered Bodies > Eco-Schools
Eco-Schools

Eco-schools become a nexus for health, environment, community, and learning.

Many schools operate in a complicated community arena in which a variety of issues come together—food nutrition and safety, children’s public health, community involvement, environmental safety, rising energy costs—all in addition to learning and education. Schools can become centers for these connected issues, creating safer environments for children and fostering environmental stewards of tomorrow.

Ways to Start Taking Action

  1. Join a group for advocating children's health or environmental safety in schools, such as the Healthy Schools Network
  2. Find out how to make your school more sustainable at the Center for Ecoliteracy
  3. Connect your school with the nearest Farm-To-School program, or start one in your area
  4. Support the Green Schools Initiative and find resources to create a healthy school

Zenobia Barlow, cofounder of the Center for Ecoliteracy, says schools are not just buildings, but networks of relationships.

In this article from the November 2009 issue of Phi Delta Kappan, Monica Martinez examines how threats to the health of our youth from climate change and pollution raise the need for us to begin thinking of schools as part of an ecosystem.  She highlights ways in which schools, organizations, and communities are moving toward a more sustainable approach to education -- from learning experiences to healthy buildings -- and how schools have the opportunity to become centers for health and environment.
