Learning Grids
Smart-networked resource providers and learning agents create lightweight, modular learning infrastructures. These distributed, decentralized education systems can expand easily, adapt to emerging education needs, and foster communication and coordination. What results are smart education grids, in which learning flows efficiently and synergistically.

Ways to Start Taking Action
  1. Advocate reward structures that give teachers incentives for sharing and creating collective educational resources
  2. Advocate for agile and smart school technical infrastructure that enables connections among all devices and has capacity to link to other schools
  3. Establish educator-business partnerships to develop learning content
  4. Find opportunities to make use of the range of material or the instructional model offered by the UK's Open University
  5. Take a course from MIT OpenCourseWare
  6. Track South Africa's progress in its quest to create a nationwide open curriculum

Mark C. Taylor, Chairman of the Religion Department at Columbia University, calls for a complete overhaul of the idea of a university. He advocates for a restructured curriculum replacing the division-of-labor model with "a curriculum structured like a web or complex adaptive network," problem-based programs, increased collaboration among institutions, transformation of the traditional dissertation, expansion of the range of professional options for graduate students, the introduction of mandatory retirement, and the abolition of tenure.
