Open-Source Assessment: A Trend of Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition > Open-Source Assessment
Open-Source Assessment
Data trails, participatory media, and visual tools create new bases for reputation, mastery, and recognition. The slough of data being produced will often require methods of interpretation and evaluation beyond what reductionist metrics can provide. One powerful sensemaking strategy will be to make such methods open-source, i.e. allow a community of users to judge performance according to open criteria. Reputation economies are an early form of such assessment: rather than relying on algorithms to weigh multiple variables, different platforms can aggregate evaluations.

Ways to Start Taking Action
  1. Support students in developing electronic personalized learning plans
  2. Explore a revolutionary approach to academic publishing at Rice University Press
  3. Find an entrepreneur in the third world on Kiva and and help empower them out of poverty
  4. Visit the remarks of a student's teacher on Rate My Teachers and discuss why they do or do not create a realistic description of that teacher
