Personal Metrics: A Trend of Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition > Personal Metrics
Personal Metrics
Personal data trails about preferences, attributes, and performance shape an evidence-based culture. A multitude of sensors will generate and aggregate massive amounts of data about the self. These data trails will drive a deeply quantitative understanding of our selves — and new strategies for using complex quantitative data for modifying behavior. The wide array of data types will inspire people to navigate their own paths, focusing on data they deem personally relevant.

Ways to Start Taking Action
  1. Find out what impacts your actions and food intake have on your body using BodyBugg
  2. Track and understand your baby's patterns using Trixie Tracker
  3. Share travel plans with colleagues and friends using Dopplr and meet up when you're in the same place

In this article from the October 2009 issue of Phi Delta Kappan, Monica Martinez explores how shifts toward deep personalization -- including the value that today's students place on customization and the fact that many of our actions can be tracked, leading to the availability of many individualized metrics -- raise questions about how education might be customized for students to a degree not seen before.
